Movers And Shakers Online

NXE has released a list of The Top 50 most Influential Bloggers. I like these lists because although I recognize most of the faces, there are some new ones to learn from and about. Some, like Digg.com’s Kevin Rose, don’t exactly qualify as ‘bloggers’ though.

Stop the Press: Only six of them are female. Does that mean that in general, men are better at blogging? And why isn’t gossipmeister Perez Hilton there? Love or hate the man, his recent swipes at Britney Spears’ lackluster MTV ‘performance’ have generated thousands and thousands of comments - 7000+ following the simple “How bad was Britney y’all?“!

Goal: To get on Top Blogger lists like these without bribery/Photoshop.

I suppose these lists are biased by the creator’s tastes. It was a good list though.

Maybe someone should create a list of female bloggers only?!

  2. richminx Says:

Good point Catherine, then I could put myself on the list! And you! :)

  3. Jack @ The Tech Teapot Says:

Err, why not just compete and get on a none gender related top 50. You’ve got to get out there and not confine yourself to a women only ghetto.

  4. L Says:

Actually, Kevin Rose does qualify as a blogger. He informs the Digg community about new feature releases and other happenings at Digg (such as the Microsoft deal) before the mainstream media is alerted.

i think it’s all relative as well, some of those bloggers should be higher in my opinion, while they might be lower for someone else. maybe we should make a top 50 list of our own than compile them and see who overlaps, then make a list form that

  6. Richard Callaby Says:

Lists are great ways of attracting links so I think of them more as link bait then anything else. My list of top bloggers will probably differ from the majority of those out there and this is a good thing as the Internet is a great equalizer of information.

  7. Kirsty Says:

I don’t even think I could name 50 bloggers let alone come up with little blurbs about each one. It was a good read though… lots of big players out there!

  8. Rhys Says:

    Classic link baiting!

I just feel though link baiting could be dying, as I can imagine people are getting sick of it.

Think about it, they only way you can link bait effectively is if you tick off the big bloggers, unless you resort to something like “Top 50 bloggers with less than 200 readers to their feed”, which may attract the attention of those said 50 bloggers.

I dunno. I’ll just stick to calling a post “FREE SEX” when I want to grab people’s attention ;)

  9. richminx Says:

Jack: You’re right, but I guess some people prefer gender-specific lists so they can have their place.

L: Kevin is technically a ‘blogger’ but is it his blog he’s famous for and which influences people?

Doug and Richard: It would be interesting to see more such lists and compare. Are you going to make one?

Kirsty: Thinking about how many bloggers are out there can be a bit overwhelming! I try and keep the ‘everybody is a unique snowflake’ idea in mind :)

Rhys: Link baiting for the sake of it can get boring. What about The Top 50 Top 50 lists? ;)

  10. Richard Callaby Says:

    Shona,

In answer to your question. Respectfully ,no, I will not create such a list. I just do not see why anyone would be interested in a no name blogger like myself to state who are the most influential bloggers out there. Just does not see a good use of time.

Besides I am working on other projects that I hope will serve my audience. Details coming soon.

  11. Scott Lawton (Blogcosm) Says:

Comparing individual lists would be interesting — though in theory those are already reflected in a blogroll. Another way to make a “top 50″ list more meaningful is to slice it into categories. Here’s what I found for the NxE list:

    19 in Computers & Internet
    11 in Business & Finance
    8 in News & Politics
    6 in Society & Culture
    4 in Entertainment
    2 in Shopping (gadgets)

(See my post for details, including 2 dozen sub-categories.)

A regional look would also be interesting, e.g. I think “down under” is well represented.

  12. Emma Says:

I’m sorry this is somewhat off topic. I just wanted to let you know that your blog is one of my new favorites and I’m glad I discovered it.

Oh yeah, and I agree with you, we need more female bloggers on the list. We need to get out there. Cheers, Emma

  13. richminx Says:

Thanks Emma! Compliments are never off-topic ;) I love your New Word Monday idea and competition - I had a go!

Scott, a regional look would be interesting. Although on the other hand it’s quite handy being able to go global. New Zealand traffic accounts for about 2% of my total traffic. :)

Richard, sounds mysterious! Let us know when your project goes live.

    “Without bribery or Photoshop.” ROFL!
