Video Post: Traffic, Posting and Swearing
This is my second attempt at a video post and my first round of ‘Dear Rich Minx’ where I answer money-blogging questions submitted by you, the readers! Well, three of you
If you have a question for me (ideally about money/blogging/web stuff), leave it in the comments below. You get my wisdom AND a link.
You may have noticed that I’m a much better writer than speaker; that’s because I’m a bit of an introvert (an introverted blogger, no way!). But I’m enjoying getting out of my comfort zone and learning about video blogging in the process.
What I cover in this video post:
- Resident Alien asked me which websites send me the most traffic when I do a money post. Mostly it’s organic Google searches because the keywords are popular, but I also used to submit to several blog carnivals when I was more organized. Carnivals can be great for targeted traffic.
- Ryan Shamus asked me what I thought about posting frequency. Should we post every day? I don’t think so, unless we have something useful to say and feel like blogging. As an RSS subscriber, I quite enjoy having a break from reading blogs every day. But I think it’s important that there’s some pattern so people know what to expect.
- Richard (no url) asked if someone with a weird tic (eg. chronic swearing) should do a video post. I say, go for it! Edit the swear words out or just leave them in for color and effect. I’d love to see more bloggers doing video posts! Who’s next?
Self-assessment for the post below
- Improvements since my first post: Hair out of face, slightly more level camera angle, better lighting (I figured out blogging in the evening was much better), thrilling intro music added, my url added.
- To be worked on: I’m still too serious, a Giant Floating Head, and the editing needs tweaking. I also need a better background (law books to look learned?), but that will have to wait until my stuff’s unpacked.

Thanks RichMinx.
I have been submitting my articles to a few Blog carnivals, but did not get a whole lot of traffic, but I do get readers who really are interested in Personal Finance and not just random readers who are surfing the Net.
As you said, having the right keywords is key to get traffic from Google searches. I’m going to start working on that.
Thanks.
August 14th, 2007 at 12:46 amCool. Thanks for the second video post. Quite enjoyed it actually. This whole thing on YouTube should also help you get some more traffic as well I would imagine.
August 14th, 2007 at 5:47 ampretty cool video Shona…
I really like this change… refreshing… keep it up..
August 14th, 2007 at 2:17 pmGreat post. I really should think of a question to ask, not because I want a linkback, just for the fact that people from your neck of the woods always have trouble pronouncing my name
August 14th, 2007 at 11:34 pmHey there,
Great job on that one. I was liking the wee musical intro, I gotta say. I’ve been a web geek for years but have never had a blog. I like all the interaction so might have to get off my arse and get one going.
Cheers for the tips,

Hi Rich minx,
I finally moved on from my blogspot blog to an actual domain name.
My website is now: http://www.everythingfinanceblog.com/
Do you mind changing my website in your post ?
Also, do you have any ideas as to how can I still maintain my pagerank, Alexa ratings etc. that I had with my blogspot domain ?
Thanks in advance.
August 15th, 2007 at 7:13 amThanks guys! Rhys, how is your name pronounced? I would say it to rhyme with ‘peace’.
August 15th, 2007 at 7:50 amHi to you as well!
Thanks for answering my question Minx! I’m a huge fan of the vids, so keep them coming! I’m sure you’re tired of hearing this…but your accent gives off an air of comfortable professionalism that makes it very believable and authoritive (and to us Americans, it just sounds cool as hell). Good stuff!
August 15th, 2007 at 8:59 amWow, thanks! I’m glad people like my accent. It’s 100% natural, no surgery or anything!
August 15th, 2007 at 9:21 amResident Alien - If Shona doesn’t mind, I’ll step in and answer this one. It’s great to see that you made the jump to a domain over a free account at blogger.
Sadly, there isn’t anything you can do to maintain your google pagerank, backlinks, alexa ranking, technorati authority, etc. All of these are now gone.
However, now that you made the switch, once you build these things back up (and you will), they’ll be yours forever! You no longer have the need to move.
Sorry for the sad reality, but you are STILL better off moving from a free account to a domain.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:09 pmYES! Wow, you must be the first person from Australia/NZ to get that. I usually get Rice, which drives me insane
Oh, and ResidentAllen, is there any way you can add a 301 redirect? That would protect it to some extent (it’s free, so probably not).
I agree with Bryan, you’ve done the write thing
August 15th, 2007 at 7:04 pmRhys - A 301 redirect isn’t recognized by
August 15th, 2007 at 8:48 pmGoogle. I’m not sure about alexa, technorati, etc… but I’d love to find out!
Thanks Bryan.
August 16th, 2007 at 12:16 amYeah, even though I’m starting again, it shouldn’t take long to get back to my usual page rank.
