How Do You Deal With Blog Envy?

Sad CatLately I have been suffering from a bit of blog envy, or, as I’m going to call it, blogvy. It’s not a very nice feeling, in fact it feels quite childish. I may have to change my blog theme to green.

I think most of us feel blogvy from time to time when:

  • A ‘parent’ (A-list) blogger bestows more attention on the Blogvy blog than on yours.
  • The Blogvy blog is receiving a lot more visitors. Their living room is filled with constant hilarious parties, whereas your blog had a couple of door knockers who stepped into the hallway but then left again.
  • The Blogvy blog has a higher income. They announce their earnings, which results in more visitors and parties (see above).
  • The Blogvy blog is prettier than yours. It has a perfect balance of colors without distracting from its perfect navigation and layout. At public blog gatherings, a band of admirers crowds around it.

So how to deal with it?

  • Don’t hack into their blog and pull the plug or knock down their building blocks. That’s mean, and they’ll cry.
  • Look at yourself. What are you lacking that makes you envious of them? And what do you have that they lack?
  • Take a breather. Sometimes things seem worse when you have over-blogged. Return with a fresher perspective.
  • Blogvy is one of the Seven Blogging Sins. Confess, or it’ll rankle and you’ll never find blogger nirvana.

Have you ever felt blogvy? How do you deal with it?

Guess what? I suffer this from time to time too. It’s not good, but, it’s hard to resist. :(
For me, I would spend my time leaving comments on their blog (like this one, haha!) and hope that someone would notice my link and add me to their RSS feed reader. How’s that for a win-win situation? ;)

    Hi Chee,

That’s a good point, actually. Spend more time connecting and less time navel-gazing. Now I’m going to visit your site!

  3. Chee Kui Says:

Thanks for the time ;) And repent before it’s too late :p

Hey now, Everyone has blogvy or LookAtThemvy, just have to do your best and improve and persevere.

So the blogvy site “has more income” but it have the word “rich” in its domain or title? Perhaps that might be one area of improvement to consider. I hope you don’t take me negatively at all, I love your posts here and they are very engaging. But as interesting as they are I am not sure it always goes with the title of the page, and that might have a lot to do with number of people staying or paying more attention. You know us fickle readers and viewers, we only give it a few seconds to see if this is the place we want to be on, so I would thing the title matters a lot.

Now, sorry for going on and on, I wouldn’t if I didn’t care at least a litte :)

Sorry for all the mispells above, I hate portable laptops and when I have no time for spellchecking!

  6. richminx Says:

You don’t like my name? *tears*

Seriously, you might be right. But Money Minx was taken. And Rich Minx is a name to grow into :)

  7. Roberta Says:

I suffer from this too. I look at several less established blogs who are monetizing better and think, ‘how can I be like them?’ I try not to think about it too much, I just try to create a buzz or two here and there :)

  8. richminx Says:

    You’re good at buzzes, Roberta!

  9. Kuanyin Says:

Hand waving in the air and pointing at me: I confess! I’m only jealous of one thing: comments. Money, nah! But comments….greeeeeen!

  10. richminx Says:

Yes, a post without comments can be a bit like a performance with no applause at the end! :)

  11. Kate Says:

Rich minx, I feel your pain. I’ve been looking at other people’s blogs over the weekend and by last night I felt like the chubby kid who isn’t picked for a team in sports practice (nothing against chubby kids, I was one myself and I still like to pack a few pounds occasionally). I think your post will have struck a chord with many a green-eyed blogger. I think I’ll just go and make up some comments for my own posts now… how about “What hilarity, wit, intelligence! Kate must truly be overwhelmingly beautiful and lithe to have come up with this!” Too much do you think?

  12. richminx Says:

Maybe just a tad :) How about something like, “Rich Minx, that was the best post I have ever read. You have replaced Shakespeare and Wordsworth at the top of my esteemed writers’ list. The Pulitzer’s in the mail.”

  13. V. Neely Says:

I know I’m late to the envy-party here, but… gosh darn it, that grouchy, fuzzy, pouty cat is so cute. It’s not my fault! The kitty made me do it!

But on a more relevant note, I do suffer from blog envy from time to time. I don’t eyeball the “super stars” of blogging so much, but the blogs that seem to be relatively new and are still doing way better. I try to deal with it by figuring out how my own blog can be better, and what I can do to promote it… that kind of thing.

  14. richminx Says:

You’re never too late to post a comment - I get an email alert when one is left :)

I know, it’s so cute! I’m partial to cat pics. Although that cat pic looks more like a pompom.

  15. Simonne Says:

Hi, I’ve just discovered your blog. I like your layout, and at first sight it seems you have managed to develop a community around your blog. Your cat picture is memorable, actually that attracted me to read some content when I landed here :)

  16. richminx Says:

Thanks Simonne. Now I have to find a way to keep you! :)
