Yesterday I spent some time browsing Kumiko’s Cash Quest, a very pink blog from a Japanese girl called Kumiko who advises readers on how to make money blogging. Kumiko’s blog stands out because 1) It’s very pink, 2) She’s actually making money and getting good traffic and 3) She has some original insights.

Take this post about Britney Spears and what she can teach us about blogging. It’s one of Kumiko’s top posts, and after reading it I was convinced. I’d never considered Britney a role model before, but there you go. Kumiko’s tip for generating a post like that one was to check what’s hot in Technorati searches and then relate it somehow to your blog. So I thought I’d do a post about that process.

1. Head to Technorati’s homepage. (checking my authority on the way. 12! Woohoo!)
I also popped over to Google Zeitgeist to compare and find a common search term. The term? Paris Hilton. Meh. But okay.

2. Make a list of things I know about Paris Hilton:

• She’s a slapper.
• She’s set to inherit a ****load of money from Daddy Hilton of Hilton Hotels.
• She makes her own money from appearing in films and reality TV shows like The Simple Life where she and friend Nicole had to live with bumpkins and hilarity ensured (or did it?).
• She appears on thousands of websites, in newspapers and fashion magazines, and on the TV. People are fascinated by her, whether they like her or not.
• She’s compared herself to Princess Diana as an “icon”.
• She was in a sex tape leaked online. Everybody’s done that now, but she was one of the first.
• Latest claim to fame: being sentenced to jail for violating the terms of her parole. Like a game of Monopoly gone horribly wrong.

3. Things Paris and Rich Minx have in common:

• Um… I got arrested once for stealing a cop’s helmet?

4. Things we can learn from Paris Hilton:

• Earn your own money. Paris could’ve rested on her heiress butt and done nothing, but she has a career of her own. A bizarre, bemusing spectacle of a career, but a career nonetheless.
• Do what you love. Paris loves shopping, going out with her friends, being the center of attention. She’s sure achieved that.
• Don’t take it too far. If you’re pushing the boundaries, watch it. Paris got jail; we could get banned from Digg, Google, John Chow.
• Be careful what you share. A bedroom camera rolled, and an international sex tape was born. You could argue that this helped her career, but did she have any say over it?

See, she’s not so bad after all. What have you learned from Paris Hilton?
