Movie Economics

Subtitle: DVD, download, or double-digit disappointment? Well, duh…

Being passionate about movies, I used to spend a lot on movie tickets (apart from my happy stint working in a movie theatre) but I don’t go to the cinema much anymore. Not only can it be annoying (getting there on time only to sit through half an hour of banal ads and previews, people’s cellphones ringing during crucial scenes, whispers, crunches, farts…) it’s expensive.

Why would I want to put myself through all that when I can stay at home, alone or with people I want to see the movie with, surrounded by food and beverages of my choice, remote in hand to control the settings, and save money doing it?

Movie studios are too slow to catch on to the changes in home entertainment. It’s hard to pity the billion-dollar studios crying into their golden handkerchiefs. I think tales of “lost revenue” are exaggerated - how can you measure? Just because I download something doesn’t mean I would’ve seen it at the cinema otherwise.

Yet people still seem to be going to the cinema, oddly enough. I’m sure a couple of people at least will attend Spidey 3.

PS: Signing up for cinema memberships (and befriending film reviewers) can be a great way to score free movies… just be strong and walk past the candy (see post below)!
