My First Tag
Hey, my first tag as Rich Minx, from No Limits Ladies! Thanks, Ladies.
My Five Obsessions
Hmm, how to choose just five? But here we are:
1. Checking things. My stocks (more about those another post), my stats, my earnings, my emails, news.google.com, my blog feeds… yes, much time is spent this way. And when employed my job is always online (I guess my main trade is Web Editor, or Webmistress as some call me) so I’m free to surf away, though I’d never do anything blogging-related from the office. IT is watching.
2. Movies. I see a lot of them. My favourite student job was working in a cinema. The pay was lame but the hours were good and I could watch any movie for free. I saw a lot! And then I like to go straight to imdb.com to vote and see what others think.
3. Food. I’m lucky to come from a skinny family, but I take real pleasure from eating. I used to write for a food magazine but it was quite hard looking at the pictures all day!
4. Travel. I’m from NZ so it isn’t easy to just ‘pop’ over to other countries, apart from Australia. But I love to travel and have spent my 20s doing much of it, working along the way by teaching, writing, working online. And saving before I start. I regret none of my travel, but I do wish I’d invested just a little of that travel money… but live and learn.
5. Reading. Mostly blogs and websites now, but the odd book. And definitely magazines. I can’t believe how cheap magazines are here in the US. In NZ we can buy most of the same mags but with freight costs they’re about four times the price so you have to really want them! There just isn’t enough time to read all the good magazines. I love film magazines, and have started reading Wired and Business 2.0 which are mainly aimed at men (you can tell by the advertising, for one thing) but are very interesting.
Five Reasons Why I Blog:
1. To write. I’m a journalist and writer, so it doesn’t feel like work. I’ve been blogging on and off since the late ’90s: entertainment blogs, travel blogs, personal blogs. The problem is I start and stop them, so never build up a firm readership. I’m determined to commit to this one.
2. To record. I travel to a lot of places, watch a lot of films, and I like to keep a record. This blog is to record money lessons, for example. The more I learn (and I still have a lot to learn), the more I look around and see women struggling with money. I still can’t believe schools don’t teach this stuff! Why not finance, if we’re forced to choke down trigonometry?
3. To share. In the hope that others might find something interesting or useful. It’s so rewarding when people read and respond to what you’ve written. And it’s so easy to do online. I’ve written for print, but I’d take online anytime for the interaction (if not the money).
4. Money. I hope to make some money from blogging one day. I went to an inspiring blog seminar last night (post on that to come) run by someone who’s made it big from blogging. It can be done!
5. To learn and ‘meet’ new people (well, that’s two reasons). Blog surfing reveals many interesting people doing amazing things. You can build networks and support groups.
Why wouldn’t you blog?
