What Would Having Money Mean To You?
Okay, I’ve read Chapter 2 of Smart Women Finish Rich. It encouraged me to think about my values and what having money would mean to me, related to those values. (Values mean things like freedom or helping others, not paying off student loans. That’s a goal.) It encouraged me to start with a base value, eg freedom, and then create a ladder to more specific values by asking myself what that ‘rung’ would mean to me, and then adding the next ‘rung’ with my answer. So for example, having freedom would involve having more time to do what I want, which would give me more control over my life, etc.
So I sat down with pen and paper. Here’s my money/values ladder (start at the bottom):
Travel, socialise, help others, rewarding work
Better work/life balance
Fulfillment, peace, independence
Control of life
More time
Freedom
